Thirteen Dallas ISD Schools Named Exemplary By TEA

1 Aug 2006

District has 67 Recognized campuses over last year’s 43 Recognized

DALLAS—According to Texas Education Agency Accountability Ratings released Monday in Austin, 13 Dallas Independent School District schools have been named Exemplary, 67 Recognized and 106 are Academically Acceptable.

Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said, "It is encouraging to see that the number of Exemplary and Recognized schools has increased by 31 over last year’s numbers. However, the number of Academically Unacceptable schools is still cause for concern.  It is my goal that one day all Dallas ISD schools will be Exemplary and we continue to work toward reaching that goal."

Twenty-three schools in Dallas ISD were rated academically unacceptable. A factor contributing to the higher percentage of unacceptable schools is that performance standards were raised from 50 percent to 60 percent for reading, writing and social studies; 35 percent to 40 percent for math; and 25 percent to 35 percent for science.

Of the 23 academically unacceptable campuses, 11 are high schools, 7 are middle schools and 5 are elementary schools.  Eight of the 11 high schools did not meet standards for math. At the middle school level, reading and math for six of seven schools contributed to their not meeting standards.  All five schools at the elementary level did not meet the science standards.

The campuses rated exemplary include:  School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, School for the Talented & Gifted at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, James B. Bonham Elementary, Julia C. Frazier Elementary, William Lipscomb Elementary, William B. Travis Academy  and Vanguard,  C. F. Carr, Mount Auburn, H. S. Thompson , Phillis Wheatley,

T. D. Marshall and Joseph McMillan.

Beginning in 2005, registered Alternative Education Campuses are evaluated under the Alternative Education Accountability system.  These campuses are assigned three similar rating labels applied under the standard accountability procedures:

All three Dallas ISD schools registered as Alternative Education Campuses—Middle College, Maya Angelou Health Special and Hospital Homebound—were rated Acceptable.
