Dallas ISD, El Hispano News Partnership Focuses On Parent Education

13 Sep 2006

First of three information fairs will be at Runyon Elementary, September 30

DALLAS—Parents Step Ahead, an educational partnership between the Dallas Independent School District and El Hispano News, will bring a series of information and educational seminars to three schools in Dallas—Runyon, Cowart and Saldivar elementaries.

Computer literacy, effective discipline, test-taking skills, family counseling, college preparation and gang and drug awareness are some of the topics to be discussed at the fairs.

"El Hispano News wanted to celebrate its 20th year anniversary with an event that would benefit the community by bringing resources and information to them," said Rene Martinez, executive director—Student and Parent Engagement. "The seminars will be offered in English and Spanish and the topics have been selected to meet the needs of each community. We commend the paper for choosing to highlight their anniversary in such a remarkable way."

The first in a series of three seminars will be offered Saturday, Sept. 30, at John W. Runyon Elementary School, 10750 Cradlerock Drive. The opening session is at 9 a.m. Breakfast and daycare for the children of the participating parents will be provided. In addition, participants will qualify to win the Parent of the Year award, and three parents will win a home computer system. Winners will be announced at a gala event in December.

Upcoming seminars are scheduled for Oct. 21 at Leila P. Cowart Elementary, 1515 S. Ravinia Drive, and November 4 at Julian T. Saldivar Elementary, 9510 Brockbank Drive.
