Dallas ISD Parents Receive Overview Of Their Children's Educational Curriculum

13 Oct 2006

New "refrigerator" curriculum provides parents more information about what children are learning

DALLAS–As part of a comprehensive set of targets and initiatives known as Dallas Achieves, Dallas Independent School District parents of elementary and middle school students, have received a "refrigerator curriculum."

The "refrigerator curriculum" is a brochure that contains information about the realigned curriculum for students in a single page form for hanging under the magnet on the refrigerator.

"This curriculum overview gives parents an idea of what their children are learning during a regular school day and also provides an avenue for them so they can better assist their children at home with their academics," said Renita Berry, assistant superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction Department.

The brochure contains information about all subjects taught in school, mathematics, language arts, science, social studies, art, music, drama and technology among others.

"The district's goal is to communicate to parents and the community what is expected from children in school and to make their participation in their children's education easier," said Berry.

Parents of high school students will receive a high school overview of courses at the end of October and a complete high school curriculum overview during the February parent conference night.

The overview for the elementary and middle school curriculum is available on the district's Web site www.dallasisd.org under the academics section.
