Sculptures Were Installed at the Schools Named After Them

DALLAS–Original art commemorating the work and efforts of Sam Tasby and Jack Lowe Sr. have been installed at the schools named after them.

Lowe and Tasby were community leaders and key figures in desegregating Dallas schools. Lowe died in 1980 at the age of 67. Tasby continues to serve the community. Currently he is a member of the Dallas Achieves Commission.

Each school lobby and a shared area feature a one-of-a-kind permanent art piece. The art consists of three mobiles and a sculpture designed, created, and installed by Dallas-based artist David Hickman.

The third mobile, honoring Tasby is titled "Perseverance." It hangs in the main entrance of Tasby Middle School. This mobile symbolizes Tasby's dedication and perseverance to change things for the Dallas' students. Tasby was a plaintiff in the landmark lawsuit to desegregate Dallas schools.

The fourth sculpture honoring Tasby and Lowe, is titled "Learning Together." The sculpture is shared by both schools. It hangs at the intersection of two hallways connecting the schools. It symbolizes the different ages and ethnicity of the children who attend both schools and resembles a stream of red, yellow, blue, green, purple, and turquoise balloons.
