Dallas ISD Dedicates Jerry Junkins Elementary School

28 Nov 2006

School Named in Honor of Education Advocate, Business Leader

DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District administrators and members of the district's Board of Trustees will join students, staff and community members at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 2, for the dedication of Jerry R. Junkins Elementary School, 2808 Running Duke Drive, Carrollton.

The school is named for the late Jerry Junkins, president, CEO and chairman of Texas Instruments, who died in 1996. Junkins was instrumental to the growth of industry locally and nationally. His accomplishments included serving as a presidential appointee to the Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations, a role in which he secured congressional passage of the international free-trade legislation, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

Junkins was also a committed advocate for early childhood education and utilized TI's influence to help create model Head Start programs. He fought for education reform in Texas schools by promoting measurement and accountability in the classroom.

The dedication will include remarks from Carrollton's Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Larry Williams and Dallas ISD Board Trustee Edwin Flores as well as a proclamation from the City of Addison. Phil Ritter, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs-Texas Instruments, will speak on behalf of the Junkins family.

The Thomas C. Marsh Middle School JROTC will participate, and Junkins' kindergarten and first grade classes will perform.

A dedication ceremony for Jimmie Tyler Brashear Elementary School, the eighth of 12 new Dallas ISD schools to be dedicated this year, is set for 4 p.m., Sunday, December 10 at the school, 2959 S. Hampton Road. Four additional schools will be dedicated in the spring.
