Information fair will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, at Skyline High School
DALLAS–Students interested in enrolling in one of the magnet, vanguard or academy programs offered by the Dallas Independent School District should attend the magnet school information fair scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 6, at Skyline High School, 7777 Forney Road.
Under the district's magnet school system are magnets for high school students, academies for middle school students and vanguards for elementary students. The schools provide career-oriented or a special interest curriculum in addition to a complete academic program.
"The magnet schools offer unique educational opportunities and experiences that cannot be found within the district's traditionally configured neighborhood schools," said Keisha Crowder, director of Magnet Programs. "Students have access to college preparatory courses, which investigate and explore today's career choices."
Program representatives will be present at the fair to assist students and parents in preparing the application form and portfolio required for admission consideration. Under the guidelines approved by the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees, students will be selected based on their grade-point average, performance on national norm-reference tests and a third assessment, such as an interview, essay or audition.
Approximately 4,500 students are admitted to the magnet program each year. The specialized and focused career-oriented curriculum for high school students offer areas ranging from dentistry to forensic science, banking to law, social services, computer engineering, and the arts.
Magnet school information is also being delivered to students in the district. Additionally, applications are available at district schools, the School Administration Building at 3700 Ross Ave., and on the district's Web site at www.dallasisd.org. The final date to submit applications for the 2007-2008 school year is February 28.
