Dedication Of Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School To Be Held January 27

19 Jan 2007

Vickery Meadow Campus Named in Honor of Prominent Community Leader

DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District administrators and members of the district's Board of Trustees will join students, staff and community members at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 27, for the dedication of Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School, 7000 Holly Hill Drive.

The school is named for the late Lowe, a cross-cultural leader and dedicated businessman who was a strong supporter of public education. Born John Burford Lowe, Jack Lowe (as he was called) is best remembered for his work as the chief architect of the Dallas Independent School District's desegregation plan that was adopted by the U.S. Federal Court in 1976.

Jack Lowe Sr. Elementary School is part of an educational complex that shares many common spaces with another new school, Sam Tasby Middle School. Four mobile sculptures, created to represent the goals and spirit of Jack Lowe and Sam Tasby, have been installed at the schools.

The event will include a remembrance of Jack Lowe Sr. delivered by his son, Dallas ISD Trustee and Board President Jack Lowe, and a short video about Lowe. Other speakers scheduled are Board Trustee District 3 Leigh Ann Ellis, and Chief Adminstrative Officer Steve Flores. The Conrad JROTC Honor Guard will participate, along with the Lowe Elementary Choir. Drama students will perform a skit about lessons learned from the example of Jack Lowe Sr.

The Dallas ISD opened 12 new schools during the 2006-2007 school year. Additional dedication ceremonies are scheduled as follows:
