Changes needed to accommodate the opening in the fall of three new schools
DALLAS—Changes in attendance zones to accommodate the opening in the fall of three new Dallas Independent School District schools will be in effect by the start of the 2007-08 school year.
Zone changes were approved for approximately 50 schools. The changes are the result of the district's long-range plan to address student population changes and overcrowding by opening 21 new schools and expanding existing schools as part of the 2002 bond program.
"As three of the remaining four new schools open, changes to the attendance zones are needed to provide more equitable classroom utilization among district schools," said Cecilia Oakeley, associate superintendent—Evaluation and Accountability.
Schools scheduled to open in the fall are Larry Smith Elementary School, 5229 Gus Thomasson Road, Hector P. Garcia Middle School, 700 East Eighth Street, and Harold Wendell Lang Sr. Middle School, 1678 Chenault Street.
The opening of Smith will change attendance zones of Casa View, Conner, Gill, Kiest, Sanger, Reinhardt and Truett elementaries. Garcia's opening will change attendance zones for Greiner and Quintanilla middle schools. The opening of Lang will affect attendance zones of Florence, Gaston, Hill and Hood.
"It is important for parents to know that any student currently enrolled in a high school or middle school may choose to remain at the school if the zone is changed," said Oakeley. "However, because of overcrowding, students currently enrolled at Tasby Middle School do not have the option to remain at the school if their zone is changed. Any incoming student must attend the assigned campus."
