Local non-profit agencies to benefit from students' fundraising efforts
DALLAS-Dallas Independent School District students and district staff will hold a news conference to announce the recipients of more than $54,000 collected during the Common Cents campaign at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at the Communities Foundation of Texas, 5500 Caruth Haven Lane.
Common Cents is a student-led coin collection effort designed to raise money for charity and non-profit organizations while encouraging good citizenship and social responsibility in schoolchildren.
Students from 58 Dallas ISD elementary, middle and high schools will make presentations to 38 local non-profit organizations in Dallas County.
The idea for Common Cents was brought to the district by Dallas philanthropist Louise Gartner in an effort to empower children to make a difference in their community. Overall, the students have collected more than $314,000 in coins since they started the fund raising efforts nine years ago.
