Award presentation is May 3 at SMU
DALLAS—The first Joe May Scholarship Award will be presented to the top student among the 60 seniors designated as Superintendent's Scholarship recipients at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Southern Methodist University, Hughes-Trigg Student Center, 3140 Dyer Street.
The winner will receive $1000, in addition to the $2000 awarded to all Superintendent's Scholarship recipients
May, who died in 2006, represented District 8—Love Field, Northwest Dallas and Central Dallas. He was elected to the Board of Trustees in August 2002, and served on the Board's Policy and Education Committees. He was elected as second vice-president in May 2004.
A native of Laredo, Texas, May was a U.S. Army veteran, who served with the 4th Infantry and the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Following his military service, he attended East Texas State University where he received a bachelor of science and master of science degree. At the time of his death, he was employed as a business opportunity specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration.
