More Than 16,000 Volunteers Contributed 185,677 Hours of Service
During the 2006 – 2007 School Year
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District will honor its volunteers and partners during the 38th Annual Partners in Education Recognition luncheon, Tuesday, April 24, at 11:30 a.m., at the Trade Mart of the Dallas Market Center, 2100 Stemmons Freeway.
Volunteers have contributed about 185,677 hours of service to Dallas students and programs during the 2006 – 2007 school year.
"We appreciate every Dallas ISD volunteer's support to educate and graduate students ready for college because their work is key to helping the district achieve its goal of becoming the best urban school district by 2010," said Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.
This school year Dallas ISD reported 16,960 volunteers and more than 880 active partners.
According to Loraine Green Lee, Executive Director – Community Services, "If the district had to pay for the 185,677 hours volunteered this school year, at a national rate of $18.77 per hour, the cost to the district would have been $3,485,150."
Special awards will be presented to two organizations for outstanding dedication and exceptional contributions. The 2007 Superintendent's Award will be presented by Dr. Hinojosa to the Dallas Bar Association for its partnership with the district since 1979. Since that time, the Dallas Bar Association has sponsored various programs including a city-wide Mock Trial competition. The association also has provided lawyers as mentors, and sponsored a writing initiative for students in grades kinder through 12.
Dr. Hinojosa also will present the Dr. Emmett Conrad Extra Mile Award to the organization Dallas SCORES for its partnership with the district since 2003. Dallas SCORES uses soccer, creative writing and service learning projects to inspire inner city youth literacy, communication skills, teamwork, physical fitness, citizenship, creative thinking and self confidence. Five days a week, hundreds of students attend creative writing classes while in soccer practices.
