Dallas ISD Observes Cinco De Mayo

Activities and Programs Scheduled Throughout Schools
DALLAS–Students in the Dallas Independent School District will participate in several activities in recognition of Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although the Mexican Army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.
Below are a few Cinco de Mayo events to be held in Dallas ISD schools:
- W.H. Adamson High School, 210 E. Ninth St., will have a "grito" contest during the Cinco de Mayo assembly, scheduled at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2. The assembly also will include a ballet folklorico performance and live musical performances.
- Lisbon Elementary School , 4203 S. Lancaster Road, will host a Cinco de Mayo assembly and parade, at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 3.
- Skyline High School, 7777 Forney Road, will host an assembly at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 3, featuring Moisés Molina High School Mariachi Jaguars, the guitar ensemble of Skyline High School and Salsa Dancers. The festivities at the school also will feature an exhibit organized by Texas Humanities Resource Center: "Human Interaction in the Texas México Borderlands."
- W.H. Gaston Middle School, 9565 Mercer Dr., will celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage during the Cinco de Mayo assembly, at 12:30 p.m., Friday, May 4. The assembly includes bilingual speeches about the significance of Cinco de Mayo.
- Edna Rowe Elementary School, 4918 Hovenkamp Dr., will have a "taste of México" for the community, at 12:40 p.m., Friday, May 4. Parents will bring traditional Mexican food to host a tasting festival. Festivities also include ballet folklorico performances and a theater production about the life of César Chávez.
- L.P. Cowart Elementary School, 1515 South Ravinia Dr., will host a school carnival on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m. Dallas Police Department officers will be conducting a bike rodeo.
