Dallas ISD Groundbreaking Set For Francisco "Pancho" Medrano Middle School

1 May 2007

Ceremony Honors Civil Rights Activist and Community Leader

DALLAS–Community leaders, elected officials and students will join Board Trustee Adam Medrano and Superintendent Michael Hinojosa at the groundbreaking ceremony for Francisco "Pancho" Medrano Middle School, 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 8, at 9801 Brockbank Drive.

The school, located in northwest Dallas, is named in honor of the late civil rights leader, who played an integral part in bringing Hispanics into the cultural and social mainstream. A union activist who fought unfair treatment of all minorities in the Dallas area and beyond, Medrano worked on occasion alongside César Chávez and with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Designed to accommodate 1,224 students, Francisco "Pancho" Medrano Middle School will be a 178,900-square-foot facility. In addition to standard academic and special education classrooms, the new school will include a career education classroom, an instructional technology classroom, science labs, and a media center, as well as space for alternative education, performing and visual arts, a gymnasium, a 450-seat auditorium, and outdoor playfields.
