Election is Saturday, May 12
DALLAS–Five candidates will seek three seats on the Dallas Independent School District's Board of Trustees on Saturday, May 12, with one running unopposed.
Candidate for District 4, Nancy Bingham, is running unopposed after Judge Richard Mayes, sitting for the 44th Judicial District Court, found that Kenneth Green, her opponent, does not reside in Dallas ISD District 4, and is therefore, not eligible to hold the position of Trustee of Dallas ISD District 4.
Green's name is still on the ballot only because there was insufficient time to remove his name as a candidate.
The seats currently up for election are District 4, Southeast Dallas; District 5, East Oak Cliff, Downtown, parts of Oak Lawn and West Dallas; and District 7, North Central Oak Cliff and West Dallas.
The five candidates who are seeking a seat are: District 4, Nancy Bingham (incumbent, running unopposed); District 5, Lew Blackburn (incumbent) and Virgie L. Grant-Brooks; and District 7, Jerome Garza (incumbent) and Louis Trujillo.
In order to qualify for a board seat, candidates must be 18 years or age or older on the first day of the term to be filed, a registered voter, a resident of the state of Texas for 12 months and a resident of the trustee district for six months.
All of the Dallas board trustees are elected from single member districts to serve rotating, three-year terms of office. Serving without compensation, the Dallas ISD board members are charged with hiring the superintendent, approving the annual budget, adopting policy and evaluating district performance.
