Dallas ISD To Offer Summer Enrichment Programs

Programs at No Cost Available For District Students in Grades Kindergarten Through 12
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Extended Year Programs Department will host the 2007 Summer Enrichment Programs for students grades first through 12.
The Summer Enrichment Programs are designed to provide cultural enhancement for students and broaden their knowledge and skills. More than 30 enrichment programs will be available to Dallas ISD students throughout district schools with the intention of maximizing their learning potential.
The following are some of the enrichment programs taking place during the summer:
- American Indian Cultural, a program which will take place from June 4 thru June 28, will provide an introduction to American Indian Culture. The focus of this program will be on culturally-related Math/Science; Reading/Writing; and Health and Wellness. Additionally, it will increase the students' knowledge of tribal histories and art forms, such as the teachings of arts and crafts, and sharing of drumming tradition. The program is open to students in grades one through 12.
- The Anita Martinez Ballet Folklorico will conduct dance summer camps at North Dallas High School and Stockard Middle School from June 4 thru June 28. Students will experience a program that focuses on performance and history of the Aztec folklore. Also, they will learn to create dances, art pieces and costumes pertaining to the culture and history of the time. The program is open for kindergarten through grade 12 students.
- Students in grades 3 through 8 can join the Summer Chess Camp. Divided in two groups, students will learn to play chess while sharpening their problem solving and thinking skills. The culminating activity is a tournament for all participants. The camp is scheduled from June 3 through June 28.
- Through Summer in the City, students in grades three through six, will participate in a series of summer excursions to cultural centers, museums, and parks throughout Dallas. Transportation will be provided from the Extended Year site to the excursion and back to the Extended Year site. The dates for the program are June 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 and 28.
- The Black Academy of Arts and Letters will offer a program for 200 students in grades five through 12 from June 4 through 28. Students will learn about music, dance, theater and production. The program will culminate with a final performance.
- The Summer Science Enrichment Program takes place from June 4 though 28 and offers activities for fourth grade students to enhance their natural environment knowledge. The students will learn more about science through the outdoor activities that will take place at more than 500 acres of north Texas habitat, including ponds, trails, live animals and gardeners, at the Dallas ISD Environmental Center in Seagoville.
Enrollment for the enrichment programs ends June 5 for elementary programs and the deadline for secondary school only programs is June 11.
