Dallas ISD Intake Center Will Enroll Refugee Students From Burundi

18 Jun 2007

Enrollment to Take Place on Wednesday, June 20, World Refugee Day

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center will be enrolling a group of students from Burundi, a region in central east Africa, Wednesday, June 20, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The enrollment will take place on World Refugee Day, as the State Department is bringing a record number of refugees from Burundi between June and September. The Burundian families' resettlement was arranged and facilitated through the Catholic Charities of Dallas, Refugee and Empowerment Services.

Since it opened its doors in July 2003, the Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center has provided guidance to more than 10,000 immigrant and refugee students from about 60 countries in the world, and their parents, in adapting to life in the United States and understanding the enrollment process in the Dallas ISD.

Services provided include school enrollment, academic assessment, immunizations, mentoring, tutoring and parent orientation.

Enrollment of all other students new to the country is on-going in preparation for the 2007 – 2008 school year, which starts Monday, August 27. Enrollment can only be conducted through appointments.

The Intake Center is located at 2617 N. Henderson, behind James Bonham Elementary School. To schedule an appointment, call 972-749-5760.
