20 Jun 2007

Final performances scheduled for June 29 and 30 at the Naomi Bruton Theatre

DALLAS–More than 300 Dallas Independent School District students will perform in the musical, Rhapsody In Rhythm, which opens at 8 p.m., Friday, June 29, at the Dallas Convention Center Theatre Complex, 650 South Griffin Street, (corner of Canton and Akard Streets).

The students are participants in The Black Academy of Arts and Letters Summer Arts Institute and Dallas ISD Summer Enrichment Program. This year marks the 23rd year of the Summer Arts Institute and the fifth year for the district's Summer Enrichment Program partnership. Of the 510 Dallas area students enrolled, more than 300 are Dallas ISD students.

Rhapsody in Rhythm, this year's Summer Arts Institute's production, is a choreo-poem set to music and dance based on the works of the great writer Langston Hughes. "The Summer Arts Institute is an outstanding arts and education initiative and an incredible partnership between TBAAL and Dallas ISD," says Curtis King, TBAAL founder and president and Summer Arts Institute Director. Additional performances are Saturday, June 30, at 1 p.m. and at 4 p.m. in the Naomi Bruton Theatre at the convention center.

Tickets are $1, and can be picked up at the academy's box office between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday between noon and 4 p.m.

For ticket information, please call (214) 743-2400.

The project is supported in part by Dallas ISD, Peachez, Inc., Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs and Ronald McDonald's House Charities.
