Students Enrolling Through Intake Center Will Receive Texas Rangers Game Tickets
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District's Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center has partnered with the Texas Rangers baseball team to encourage students to be in school the first day of classes – Monday, August 27.
Students who enroll through the center and their families will receive free tickets for the Texas Rangers vs. Seattle game, scheduled for Thursday, August 23, at 7:30 p.m.
"The goal of this partnership is to hit a home run and get every student to attend classes beginning the first day," said Judith Homs-Tomes, director – Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center. "Dallas ISD is working on becoming the best urban school district in the nation by 2010, and the students' attendance and academic achievement will lead us there."
Enrollment for students new to the country will continue through August at the Intake Center. An appointment is necessary. The center will be open Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
At the time of enrollment, parents and students will learn about the district's services and programs. Also, they will be referred to any necessary community services, and students will receive school supplies, backpacks and immunizations."
Students must be present to be enrolled since an assessment test is conducted. Proof of address (utility bill or lease contract), immunization record, student birth certificate, passport or I-94 (proof of age) and report cards or previous school records, will facilitate the enrollment process.
Since it opened its doors in July 2003, the Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center has provided services to more than 10,000 immigrant and refugee students. In addition to enrollment information, the center assists parents in adapting to life in the United States, and understanding the enrollment process in the Dallas ISD.
Other services provided include parent orientation, academic assessment, mentoring, tutoring, and social services referrals.
