Dallas ISD's First Districtwide College Fair Scheduled For September 20

12 Sep 2007

Information on college admission, free tuition and House Bill 1528 will be provided

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District's College Readiness and Counseling Services Departments are hosting the first districtwide college fair at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 20, at the 7th floor of the Infomart, 1950 Stemmons Freeway.

The free fair is for Dallas ISD's 11th and 12th graders and their parents. "It is important for the district to host this event because our goal is to educate and graduate students ready for college and the workforce," said Sylvia Lopez, executive director – Counseling Services. "The students have choices and it is our job to help them make a decision and to give them access to various colleges and universities."

Representative from over 100 colleges, universities and organizations will offer assistance to students and parents. Also, students and parents will benefit from sessions on topics such as college admission, financial aid, SAT/ACT exams, essay writing, career cruising, AP strategies and more. Information about how students from low income families can qualify for free tuition and room and board will also be available, as well as information about House Bill 1528. House Bill 1528 allows immigrant students to pay in-state tuition at colleges and universities in the state of Texas and they can also qualify for financial aid.

Registration will be available on-site. Transportation to and from the Infomart will be provided. Strollers and non-school age children will not be allowed to ride on the buses.

For more information about the fair, students must see their counselor.
