Students will Report to School on August 25; TAKS Testing, Fair Days listed

DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the 2008-2009 school calendar at the January 31, 2008 board meeting.

In the process of determining the annual district calendar, many factors are taken into consideration, such as state and national holidays, state and district requirements including testing dates, teacher work days, parent conference dates and inclement weather dates.

Classes will begin Monday, August 25. The school opening date complies with a new state law that was passed during the 79th Texas Legislative session in 2005.

2008-2009 school calendar highlights are:

• School starts Monday, Aug. 25, 2008; the last day of school is Wednesday, June 3, 2009.
• 
  
• The first semester ends January 16, however, winter break dates are December 22 through January 2. January 5 is a staff development day. Students return January 6, 2009.
• 
  
• Elementary Fair Day is October 3 and Secondary Fair Day is October 10. All elementary campuses will be closed on elementary fair day and all secondary campuses will be
  closed on secondary fair day. Secondary students and teachers will be in school on elementary fair day, October 3, and elementary students and teachers will be in school on secondary fair day, October 10. Teachers will not have staff development on either day.

• November 24 and 25 will be staff development days for teachers and non-school days for students. Thanksgivings break is November 26-28.
• 
  
• Spring Break is March 16-20.
• 
  
• April 10 and June 5 have been designated as inclement weather days.
• 
  
• Parent conferences are scheduled for October 13, 14 and 16, and March 9, 10 and 12.

• TAKS testing dates are October 21-24; March 3-6; April 6-9; April 27-May1; May 19; June 30; June 30; July 1; and July 14-17.
• 
  
• Other teacher preparation/student holidays are August 18-20 and September 26.
• 
  
• Other student/teacher holidays are September 1 (Labor Day), January 19 (Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday) and May 25 (Memorial Day).
