Sulentic Family Foundation Awards Ten $20,000 Scholarships To Dallas ISD Students For The Second Year

11 Feb 2008

Deadline to Submit Applications is March 20

DALLAS–For the second year in a row, 10 Dallas Independent School District seniors will benefit from a scholarship from the Sulentic Family Foundation. The application period is now open; the deadline is Thursday, March 20.

Last school year, the Sulentic Family Foundation established a $1 million scholarship program with Dallas ISD. Each year, between 2007 and 2011, the district will select 10 graduating students to receive a $20,000 scholarship each.

The Sulentics are a local family whose son and daughter attended Dallas ISD schools and, as a result, the Sulentics have a great appreciation for the school system.

"Any financial assistance that students receive will make a difference in their college education," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "The support of the Sulentic family is greatly appreciated. They are impacting the lives of many deserving students and contributing to the achievement of one of the district's goals, which is to graduate students and get them ready for college."

"The scholarship is paying for something that only seemed like a dream for me, going to college," said Ricardo Reyes, a recipient of the Sulentic Family Foundation Scholarship in 2007. Reyes graduated from the School of Education and Social Services at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. Currently he is attending Mountain View Community College and has plans to transfer to Texas Woman's University to pursue a degree in education. "I don't have words to express how grateful I am. If it wasn't for the scholarship, I wouldn't be in college right now."

Scholarship recipients will be determined based strictly on three parameters: consistently demonstrated integrity, consistently demonstrated hard work and financial need. In order to accommodate a scholarship recipient who must work while attending college, the scholarship funds may be utilized on a semester by semester basis provided the student completes at least nine credit hours at an accredited college, university, or community college each semester and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Applicants must not be related to a Dallas ISD employee or to a member of the district's Board of Trustees. Students may obtain a copy of the application, listing all the requirements, from their school counselor, or may also visit the district's Web site www.dallasisd.org for this and other scholarship opportunities.
