New Dallas ISD Early College High School Recruits Students

22 Apr 2008

April 25 is the Deadline to Apply

DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District's new Early College High School at Nolan Estes Plaza (NEP), 3434 South R.L. Thornton Freeway, is accepting student applications until April 25.

The school, a partnership with the Dallas Independent School District, Cedar Valley College and the University of North Texas Dallas Campus, is scheduled to open August 25. Early College High School at NEP will be the second early college high school for Dallas ISD; the other is Early College High School at Mountain View College.

Gayle Smith has been named principal. The school's mission is to prepare 400-plus students for higher education through rigorous coursework, offering high school students dual credit curriculum beginning with their freshman year and immersing them in college culture. Students can graduate with a high school diploma and an associate's degree or up to 60 hours of college credit. College tuition and book costs are waived. The school will open with 100-110 entering ninth-graders, and a new ninth-grade class will be added each year.

The Early College High School at NEP seeks to serve students who are traditionally underserved and underrepresented in higher education. The school will serve students who are completing the eighth grade at the following middle schools: William Hawley Atwell, E.B. Comstock, Oliver W. Holmes, D.A. Hulcy, Maynard H. Jackson, Seagoville, Boude Storey, and Sarah Zumwalt.

The Early College High School at Mountain View College is in its second year of operation. The school is seeing early indicators of success, including 99 percent attendance rates and Exemplary ratings on TAKS. Statewide, Early College High School students have earned three to 22 hours of college credit.
