Dallas ISD Selects Finalists For 2008-2009 Teacher Of The Year

The Teacher of the Year Will Be Named During a Recognition Event on May 20
DALLAS–The Dallas Independent School District has selected the four finalists for the 2008–2009 Teacher of the Year.
A committee of judges selected the semifinalists and finalists based on a number of criteria including the ability to inspire a drive for excellence in a diverse student population; commitment to professional development and contributions to the teaching profession; awareness of current issues in education; level of community involvement; and quality of interactions with parents and peers.
The finalists are:
- Suzy Smith, Edna Rowe Elementary School. Smith, who teaches art, has six years of teaching experience, all at Edna Rowe Elementary.
- Elizabeth Powers, eighth grade Language Arts teacher at Robert T. Hill Middle School. Powers has been at Robert T. Hill Middle School for four years and has taught for 31 years.
- Rita Hines, mathematics teacher for four years at the School of Science and Engineering at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. Hines has a total of 11 years of experience in the teaching field.
- Judith Kern teaches at Nancy Moseley Elementary School. Kern has been at Moseley Elementary for two years and has taught for 20 years.
The Dallas Independent School District's 2008-2009 Teacher of the Year will be announced at an awards program on Tuesday, May 20.
