25 Apr 2008

The Earning by Learning Program Stimulates Children to Read Through Cash Incentives

DALLAS–Dallas Independent School District principals and coordinators participating in the Earning by Learning Program will be honored during a reception at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, May 1, in the Flag Room at Dallas City Hall, 1500 Marilla St.

Founded in 1996, The Earning by Learning Program is sponsored by Harvard University, the Richard A. ("Ricky") Rudine Memorial Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas, the New Car Dealers Association of Metropolitan Dallas and Washington Mutual.

The purpose of the program is to reward with cash incentives, students in more than 80 Dallas ISD schools for their reading. Students read books at their own pace and test for reading comprehension. Cash incentives are awarded based on the number of book tests passed. Earning by Learning motivates students to increase their reading habits and encourages them to explore contemporary favorites, classics, short stories, biographies, and other reading material, as well as to take their books home and read as a family.

Dallas ISD principals and coordinators who attend the reception will have the opportunity to win a $1,250 gift certificate.
