Dallas ISD Student Transfer Request Period Open Through June 3
20 Mar 2008
Applications for curriculum, hardship, and school choice/PEG transfers also are available on-line
DALLAS—The period to solicit curriculum, hardship, and school choice/Public Education Grant transfers for 2008-09 in the Dallas Independent School District will be open through June 3.
Several options are available through the Student Transfer Program which allows parents the opportunity to choose schools they believe best meet the interests and/or needs of their children, as long as there is available space in the chosen school.
- The Curriculum Transfer program option gives any student in any grade the opportunity to transfer to the nearest school with available space that offers a course or program not available in his/her home school. Applications for this program will be accepted until June 3.
- The Hardship Transfer program option gives any student in any grade the option of attending a school other than his/her neighborhood school, when space is available. The student, however, must have documented personal or family circumstances that prevent him/her from attending the home school.
- Two School Choice Transfer programs give students the opportunity to transfer to higher performing schools. The application for the Public Education Grant Transfer (PEG) program (the state school choice program) runs through June 3, 2008. Public Education Grant transfers may only be from lower achieving PEG schools as identified by the Texas Education Agency to non-Public Education Grant schools with space. The application period for the School Choice/No Child Left Behind Transfer program (the federal school choice program) will be during the first six weeks of school and transfers will take place the first day of the second six weeks.
"As part of the district's Dallas Achieves transformation efforts, we are moving toward a more effective re-application process. While parents still must apply for new transfers, they no longer have to re-apply each year," said Judy Thomas, student transfers manager. "Principals will determine if transfer students will be allowed to return next year. The Student Transfer Office will notify parents of the decision in April."
Further information and transfer applications also will be available on the district's Web site at www.dallasisd.org/parents/transfers.htm.
