Dallas ISD Students Show Gains On TAKS Tests

7 May 2008

DALLAS—Dallas Independent School District students continued to make progress on the state's Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in 2008, with gains made in reading and math.

Particularly striking were gains of more than 8 points in 8th grade mathematics.

"An eight point gain districtwide in one grade is significant," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "This is the result of good teachers being supported by a standardized rigorous curriculum, collaborative planning time and quality instructional tools. While there is still a lot of room for improvement, this is encouraging news."

Dallas ISD students posted gains in reading and math in 3rd, 5th and 8th grade. Students in other grades were administered tests last week and it will be a few weeks before their results are tabulated.

In reading, Dallas ISD 3rd grade students posted a gain of 0.2 points over last year. Fifth grade reading passing levels rose 3 percent, while 8th grade passing levels increased 5.7%. In mathematics, in addition to the more than eight point gain in 8th grade, 5th grade scores went up 1.5%. Also, the number of students passing at commended levels is trending upward as well.

"There is no doubt that Dallas students are making progress," said Hinojosa. "We are not where we want to be, but our students are moving in the right direction. We will continue to make strides, thanks to the teachers, students, parents and the community."
