Mandatory Uniforms Allow a Second Shirt Option

DALLAS—During the upcoming 2008–2009 school year, the Dallas Independent School District prekindergarten through eighth grade students will continue to comply with the dress code policy established by the Board of Trustees in 2004, which requires them to wear mandatory uniforms.

The 2008 – 2009 school year begins Monday, August 25, and the district's standards for appropriate attire are

• Jackets, cardigans and sweaters – must be worn over an approved shirt; no hooded shirts are allowed for middle school students. Uniform colors are khaki, navy, black and white.
• 
  
• Skirts, jumpers, shorts and capri pants – knee-length or longer in khaki, navy or black.
• 
  
• Shirts and blouses – must be white. Students have the option of wearing one additional color selected by the individual campuses. Parents must contact their children's school to find out the color for their additional shirt option. Shirts and blouses must also be straight or button-down collar or turtleneck; long or short sleeves; may be polo-style and must be worn tucked into pants or skirt.

• Slacks and pants – pleated or flat-front; fastened at the waist; belt must be worn with pants that have belt loops. The colors are khaki, navy or black.

• Shoes – athletic shoes, loafers, dress shoes, other closed-toe and closed-heel shoes; closed-toe and open-heel mules.

Not allowed under the uniform policy are blue jeans, low-cut or low-rise pants, sagging slacks or pants, clothing with manufacturer's trademarks larger than one inch and clothing with non-Dallas ISD logos and insignias such as those of professional sports teams.

On campuses where the board has approved the use of mandatory uniforms, students will wear the school-approved uniform unless a parent or legal guardian files an objection requesting the student be exempt from the mandatory uniform requirement or transferred to a school where uniforms are not required.

Some high schools also will require students to wear uniforms.

Backpacks and book bags are again an optional item this school year. Students who choose to bring them to school can select any style.
