11 Aug 2008

Classes in Dallas ISD Schools Begin Aug. 25

DALLAS—With two weeks left before classes begin, the Dallas Independent School District and the Dallas Police Department will make a call to drivers to observe traffic laws and reduce speed in school zone areas at a news conference at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 12, at Hector P. Garcia Middle School, 700 E. Eighth St.

Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa, Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle, Dallas ISD Chief of Police John Blackburn, and school principal Gary Auld will be present.

Classes in the school district begin Aug. 25, and more than 157,000 students are expected. In addition, the district will open one new school this year, Francisco F. Medrano Middle School

State statistics show that more than 1.3 million Texas children a day ride school buses, which continue to be the safest form of highway transportation--fewer than 1 percent of traffic accidents in the state involve them. The most common time for accidents, however, is when school buses are loading or unloading students. According to a National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey, most children injured or killed while getting on or off buses are under the age of 10.
