Skyline Teacher Tapped for Award
DALLAS—Joe Wicker, a Skyline High School teacher and retired lawyer, has been named the 2008 International Educator of the Year.
The award, presented by the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, honors educators who have devoted their careers to enriching their students' knowledge of world affairs by expanding their international learning opportunities.
"I am surprised and gratified," said Wicker. "I work with many other colleagues who are truly deserving of this award, and to be singled out is indeed an honor."
Wicker teaches the law curriculum and advanced social sciences for the Man and His Environment Magnet Cluster at Skyline.
As a recipient of the award, Wicker will receive $1,000, a trip to the 2009 World Affairs Councils of America Conference in Washington, DC, and a year's membership to the World Affairs Council. Skyline's library will also benefit by receiving $500 for
"Getting young people to think globally is an important task," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "To expand students' minds so they begin to see things from a global perspective means they're getting college ready, and that's what it's all about. We're proud of Mr. Wicker's efforts and excited about his accomplishments."
