23 Oct 2008

'Nuevos Amigos' receives the first Lone Star Emmy Award and 'Zona Escolar de Dallas' its third award

DALLAS—Two Dallas ISD-produced television programs received Lone Star Emmy Awards at the 6th Annual Lone Star Emmy awards presentation held in Houston on October 18.

Nuevos Amigos, an elementary distance learning Spanish program, won in the category of Children/Youth/Teen, and Zona Escolar de Dallas, an all-Spanish version of School Zone Dallas, won Informational/Instructional Program/Special Series.

This is the first time Nuevos Amigos has won an Emmy from the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. This is the third win for Zona Escolar de Dallas.

Students throughout the school district learn to speak Spanish by watching Nuevos Amigos, which is hosted by Senorita Rebecca Garcia and an array of wacky puppets. The program airs on DSTV channel 98.

Zona Escolar de Dallas is hosted by students from the Dallas Independent School District. It airs courtesy of Univision-KUVN-23 through a unique partnership with Dallas Schools Television.

This Emmy Award-winning program was hosted by district students Laura Flores, School of Health Professions at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, and Ivan Funes, W. T. White High School. Reporters on the show were Laura Cardona, Adamson High School; Roxana Paniagua, Seagoville High School; and 2008 Justin F. Kimball graduate, Karina Pereznegron.

"It is an honor for district-produced television shows to win not one, but two prestigious awards. The awards are especially rewarding because the programs went up against some heavy hitters in the broadcast industry," stated Cathy Reaves, Dallas Schools Television director. "I am very thankful to work with incredible students and two very talented production teams."
