Dallas ISD Schools Celebrate African American Heritage Month

Schools Host Programs and Activities Throughout February

DALLAS—Students in the Dallas Independent School will observe African American History Month with events ranging from musical performances, poems and presentations, to plays and luncheons.

The national theme this year is, "The Quest for Black Citizenship in the Americas."

Among the many activities scheduled throughout the district, students from T. G. Terry Elementary School, 6661 Greenspan Ave., will learn the history of the African trade beads and will make their own necklaces at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18. Also, on Tuesday, Feb. 24, students will participate in a tasting of African American food and will learn its history.

Felix G. Botello Elementary School, 225 S. Marsalis, will observe African American Heritage Month by hosting a program on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. Each grade level, kindergarten through fifth grade, had an oratorical contest and the winner of every grade will recite his/her poem during the program. Students from second grade will sing two musical selections.

Tom C. Gooch Elementary School students also will have a program featuring student musical performances and a play. The program is scheduled at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26. The school is located at 4030 Calculus Road.
