Student Scores Improve Over Last Year
DALLAS—The initial results from the TAKS reading tests show third grade reading scores improved dramatically from last year for students in the Dallas ISD Dual Language program.
Students who began the Dual Language program as first-graders two years ago showed academic strength with 30.2 percent reaching the commended level on this year's Spanish TAKS. Last year, 17 percent of the students in the traditional bilingual program were commended.
Further analysis shows the passing rate also increased among these students from 76.4 percent last year to 82.6 percent this year.
"These early results are both exciting and encouraging," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "Students, teachers and staff have been working hard to reach a level of academic excellence. It's great to know their efforts are being rewarded with scores that prove students are reaching higher to achieve greater success."
The power behind Dual Language Education is that it provides bilingual education for students and works to build English proficiency while maintaining the students' native language through their elementary career.
Dallas ISD students will take the next round of TAKS starting April 27.
