Dallas ISD Gears Up For Summer Enrichment

Programs Offered at No Cost for District Students

DALLAS—The Dallas Independent School District will offer a variety of free summer enrichment program opportunities for district students in grades prekindergarten through 12.

Programs are designed to provide academic and cultural enrichment for students throughout the district.The following is a list of programs available for the summer:

• 
  
• The American Indian Education Program, a two-week program that offers culturally related math, science, reading and writing activities along with tribal history, storytelling and health and wellness programs. This program is open to Dallas ISD students in prekindergarten through grade 12 and takes place June 8 through 11 and June 15 through 18, at Nolan Estes Plaza, 3434 South R.L. Thornton Frwy.

• 21st Century Summer Camp features a variety of physical, fine arts and academic activities taking place Monday through Thursday, June 8 through July 2, at selected Dallas ISD campuses. This program is open to students attending a 21st Century campus.
• 
  
• Ballet Folklorico offers classes in classical ballet, folklorico, and Afro-Latino dance forms such as cumbia, bachata and salsa. The program culminates in a student recital open to family and friends. The camp takes place Monday through Thursday, June 8 through 25 at Nolan Estes Plaza, 3434 South R.L. Thornton Frwy. and is open to students who have just completed grades three through seven.

• The Summer Musical Program will engage students in music, dance, theater and theater production and will culminate with a public performance featuring the participants. The program takes place June 8 through June 27, at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, 650 S. Griffin. Students in grades five through 12 are eligible.

• The Homeless Education Program will feature an eight-week camp open to homeless students who reside in Dallas area shelters, June 8 through August 7, at Cesar Chavez Learning Center, 1710 N. Carroll, and Zaragoza Elementary School, 4550 Worth St.
• 
  
• Chess Camp will provide students an opportunity to learn to play tournament-level chess while sharpening their problem-solving and thinking skills, Monday through Thursday, June 8 through June 30 at Sidney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard, 1400 Walmsley Ave., R.L. Thornton Elementary School, 6011 Old Ox Rd., Edward Titche Elementary School, 9560 Highfield Dr. Students completing grades three through six are eligible and can participate in a world-class competitive chess tournament at the conclusion of camp.

• The Refugee Children's Summer Enrichment Program will provide active manipulative learning throughout thematic topics that offer a variety of activities including math, reading, health and
  safety. Students will also participate in field trips and a Multicultural Fair. This program is
  scheduled Monday through Thursday, June 8 through July 2, at McShan Elementary School, 8307 Meadow Rd., and is open to refugee students in grades kindergarten through five.

• The 2009 Summer Science Enrichment Program includes an in-depth study of ecology and environmental science and is offered to students who have an interest in science, the out-of-doors and nature. Scheduled for Monday through Thursday, June 8 through June 25, this program is for Dallas ISD students who complete the fourth grade in the 2008-2009 school year.
