Dallas ISD Students To Participate In Summer Music Camp

3 Jun 2009

The Dallas Wind Symphony Hosts Annual Summer Music Institute Presented by Sterling Bank

DALLAS—Dallas Independent School District band students in grades seven through 10 will have the opportunity to participate in the 3rd annual Summer Music Institute hosted by the Dallas Wind Symphony June 8 through June 12. The camp, presented by Sterling Bank, will offer more than 300 students a unique musical training experience and will take place at Moises E. Molina High School, 2355 Duncanville Rd.

During the five-day camp, students will receive musical instruction from professional musicians and members of the Dallas Wind Symphony.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for students to take a major step forward with their musical studies during the summer," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "Students who participate not only get to dedicate significantly more time to improving their musical skills, but they have a great time in the process."

The highlight of the institute is the camp-wide concert at 4 p.m., Friday, June 12. The students will showcase skills learned during the week in a final concert in the school's main auditorium. Dallas ISD band directors, administration officials, parents, sponsors and friends will all gather for the big event.

In addition to the musical instruction and concert, the students receive bus transportation to and from camp, lunch, a daily musical recital/performance by Dallas Wind Symphony musicians, a camp t-shirt, and a symphony CD. The cost for the event is $25 per student.

The Dallas Wind Symphony is regarded by some to be the premiere civilian wind band in the world, and according to Wind Symphony Founder/Executive Director Kim Campbell, concerts and institutes are just a small part of the bigger picture. "Music affects us all—no matter the age. We know music instruction for the young helps to train the mind. It instills confidence, enhances math skills, teaches cooperation, listening and self-discipline. If we can help to do that with the institute, what better way to help our youth, our schools, our community?"

In addition to Sterling Bank, other Summer Music Institute sponsors include: The Communities Foundation of Texas, the Community Trust Bank of Texas, the Bank of Texas, the Theodore & Beulah Beasley Foundation, Williamson Music Company, and many other individual donors.

The sixth belief adopted by the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees is: "we believe that engaged parents and guardians impact a student's academic and personal development."
