News Conference Scheduled for Tuesday, June 9
DALLAS–The Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will award Dallas Independent School District seniors and other deserving area students $1 million in college scholarships. Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa will join members of the GDHCC on Tuesday, June 9, at 10 a.m., in the Board Room of the School Administration Building, 3700 Ross Avenue, for the Stars on the Rise scholarships presentation during a news conference with city leaders.
This media event precedes the annual "Stars on the Rise" Scholarship Awards Banquet and Silent Auction honoring the students to be held June 12, at the Fairmont Hotel, 1717 N. Akard St.
The scholarship recipients were selected from a group of 450 applicants, based on their academic achievement, grade point average, leadership, community service/work experience, and personal essay.
Since the creation of the Stars on the Rise program more than 20 years ago, the GDHCC has collaborated with the community, corporate donors, and educational institutions to assist more than 1,000 Dallas area students with their dream of pursuing a higher education.
The Stars on the Rise program has been supported by many businesses and organizations. Some of this year's sponsors include Texas Instruments, Capital One Bank, Kroger, Verizon, Darden Restaurants, Navy Recruiting District Dallas, Texas A & M University-Commerce, DART, and Mico Restaurants.
