23 Jun 2009

Dora Rivas Named President of the School Nutrition Association

DALLAS—Dora Rivas, executive director of Dallas ISD's Food and Child Nutrition Services, has been named president of the School Nutrition Association.

Rivas was welcomed to the post by more than 5,500 members and participants at the association's 63rd Annual National Conference held in Las Vegas, NV earlier this month.

"I am honored to serve the School Nutrition Association," said Rivas. "I appreciate the support from Dallas ISD to work with other professionals to assure that our programs are funded adequately and provided with resources to promote nutrition education especially during these tough economic times."

Rivas began working with the Dallas Independent School District in 2005 after spending 27 years with the Brownsville Independent School District's nutrition department.

Rivas received her Bachelor of Science degree in Food and Nutrition from Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) and her Master of Science in Institutional Management from Kansas State University.

Before becoming president of the School Nutrition Association, Rivas served as president-elect and vice president of the School Nutrition Association after serving on the membership committee from 2005-2006. She has served as chair of the School Nutrition Association Public Policy and Legislation Committee and was the 1995-1996 president of the Texas Association for School Nutrition where she served as an officer on the board of directors.

"Dora Rivas provides outstanding leadership to our Food and Child Nutrition Services," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "To be elected as national president of the School Nutrition Association brings honor to the Dallas ISD."

The School Nutrition Association is a national, non-profit professional organization representing more than 55,000 members who provide high-quality, low cost meals to students across the country. Founded in 1946, the School Nutrition Association is the only association devoted exclusively to protecting and enhancing children's health and well being through school meals and sound nutrition education.

Locally, the Food and Child Nutrition Services Department provides 45,778 breakfasts and 118,136 lunches per day to students in the Dallas ISD.

The fourth belief adopted by the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees is: "We believe that every student must be educated in a safe, welcoming, effective and innovative learning environment."
