TI Foundation Will Announce Grants to Train Math and Science Teachers at Local Schools and Universities

DALLAS—Texas Instruments Foundation will hold an announcement ceremony at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 9, at Dallas ISD's Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School, to award grants to proven programs that address the quality and quantity of math and science teachers. The grants are designed to meet a critical shortage of qualified math and science teachers in the U.S. and Texas.

It is estimated that the U.S. will need 280,000 additional science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers by 2015. An additional 16,000 teachers are needed in Texas just to fill vacancies and replace teachers who are not fully certified to teach math and science.

TI Foundation Chairman Sam Self is scheduled to be joined by a number of educators, including Dallas ISD Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa, other area school district superintendents and presidents from local universities. Participants will discuss the scope of the problem and outline how the grants are expected to make an impact.

Rangel is located at 1718 Robert B. Cullum Blvd.

The seventh core belief adopted by the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees is "We believe that a supportive community is fundamental to achieving and sustaining our success." For a complete list of core beliefs, visit the Web site at http://www.dallasisd.org/about/vision.htm.
