Dallas ISD Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
14 Sep 2009
Schools will host events which include traditional dances, songs, and attires, as well as special guests
DALLAS–With this year's theme Embracing the Fierce Urgency of Now! the Dallas Independent School District will observe and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The dates for the national celebration originally were chosen because several Latin American countries, whose immigrants make up the Hispanic community in the United States, celebrate their independence day around Sept. 15.
Schools throughout the district will have events which include student performances of traditional dances, songs, and attires, and will entertain special guests.
Below are some of the events that will take place in Dallas ISD schools:
- Sunset High School, 2120 W. Jefferson Blvd., will host an assembly at 3:10 p.m., on Tuesday, September 15, at the school's auditorium. Students will perform ballet folklorico dances and the school's choir will perform as well as a band which will play traditional Hispanic songs.
- Henry B. González Elementary School, 6610 Lake June Rd., will host an "Independencia de México" (Mexican Independence) show on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The show will start at the front of the school with two teachers reciting the "Grito de Dolores" and ringing bells to honor the Independence Day. The show will continue in the auditorium with students' singing and dancing performances, and the re-enactment of the theme.
- Francisco "Pancho" Medrano Middle School, 9815 Brockbank Dr., will have two Hispanic Heritage programs featuring ballet folklorico dancers from Ballet Folklorico Huehuecoyotl and performances by the school's band and choir, one at 2 p.m. and the second show at 3 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 25. The celebration also will include a classroom bulletin board contest and a luncheon for the staff.
- Students performing songs and dances from Latin America will take part in the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at William L. Cabell Elementary School, 12701 Templeton Trail. The school's program is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m.
