Operation: Comeback Aims to Get Students Back in School

DALLAS—Nearly forty volunteers joined Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa and City of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert yesterday as they made calls to the homes of students who have yet to enroll in school. The calls were made as part of the Operation: Comeback initiative and marks the second year in a row that the district has partnered with the City of Dallas to combat the dropout rate.

A roster generated by Dallas Independent School District staff show approximately 1700 students had not enrolled in Dallas ISD schools for the 2009-2010 school year. Volunteers made an attempt to connect with each of the students by phone in an effort to convince them to enroll in school.

Mayor Leppert and Superintendent Hinojosa will kickoff the second part of the initiative 9 a.m., Saturday, September 12, at Thomas Jefferson High School, 4001 Walnut Hill Ln., gathering briefly to make remarks before they canvass the neighborhood to visit students encouraging them to enroll. Several teams of volunteers will participate in the initiative by canvassing different neighborhoods throughout the city.

Dallas ISD high schools will be open during the neighborhood walks to enroll students wanting to return to school. Last year, 85 students returned to school as a result of the Operation: Comeback initiative.
