Dallas ISD Superintendent Of Schools And City Of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert Canvassed Neighborhoods To Look For Students Who Have Not Shown Up At School

12 Sep 2009

The neighborhood walk is part of the efforts of the second annual Operation: Comeback initiative

DALLAS–As part of the second annual Operation: Comeback initiative, on Saturday, Sept. 12, Dallas Independent School District Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa, City of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, other elected officials, and community volunteers visited the homes of students who have not shown up to school yet.

With the goal of motivating students to return and enroll in school, the Superintendent of Schools and the Mayor departed from Thomas Jefferson High School, 4001 Walnut Hill Lane, along with the school's principal Edward Conger and other officials and volunteers.

Other Dallas ISD officials, City of Dallas officials, and volunteers walked other neighborhoods around the city in hopes of convincing potential dropouts to return to school.

This year the Operation: Comeback initiative is targeting 1,700 students who are listed as no-shows. No-shows are defined as students who have not shown up to enroll in school and are at risk for dropping out. Last year, as part of the results of the first Operation: Comeback initiative, 85 Dallas ISD students returned to school.
