15 Oct 2009

Athlete Brings Message of How to Avoid Making Bad Decisions

DALLAS—Olympic athlete Marion Jones will visit students during an assembly at W.W. Samuell High School, 8928 Palisade Dr., Friday, October 16, at 10:30 a.m. She will return to the district Friday, October 23, to speak with students at Skyline High School, 7777 Forney Rd.

During her presentation titled Take a Break, Jones will deliver her inspirational message encouraging young students to develop a system that will allow them to avoid making bad decisions that could have a profound negative impact on their lives. During the assemblies, Jones will seek to educate students about the dangers and consequences of making bad decisions and encourage them to stop and think about their actions and seek advice from people they trust in order to make thoughtful, rational choices.

Jones' talk will chronicle how the former Olympian when faced with certain challenges, failed to "take a break," think, or seek good advice and as a result, made the wrong decisions and eventually lost all she had achieved.

"The Dallas Independent School District and the students it serves have made substantial strides over the last several years. Its academic gains have been some of the most impressive in the country, and the district is now viewed as one of the nation's fastest improving urban school systems."
