Dallas ISD Students And Staff To Celebrate African-American History Month

The Celebrations Include Assemblies, Student Performances, Fund Raisers for Haiti,
Food Festivals, Door Contests and More
DALLAS–With the theme "The History of Black Economic Empowerment", Dallas Independent School District students and staff will observe African American History Month during the month of February.
Schools have organized celebrations which include assemblies, student performances, fund raisers for Haiti, food festivals, door contest, plays, class studies, and more.
Some of the events scheduled throughout the district are:
- A book giveaway by "Reading is Fundamental" will take place on Monday, Feb. 1 at Erasmo Seguin Community Learning Center, 111 W. Corning Ave. Also, a PTA Black History Program is scheduled at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9. The program will include student performances.
- At Edward Titche Elementary School, 9560 Highfield Dr., students from every grade will perform the meaning of this year's theme "The History of Black Economic Empowerment", through songs, dance, poetry, artistic displays, etc… The performances are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Maria Moreno Elementary School, 2115 S. Hampton Road, will have an African American food festival, door contest with creations that tell the African American history, and Cuban-African dances by the school's folklorico dancers throughout the month of February. Also, the school will have a PTA program, with student performances at 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
- Musical, dance, and poetry performances are among the activities to be presented by Skyline High School's Multi-Cultural Committee and Library, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23. Students will also participate in "Jeans for Haiti Teens Drive." Also, William Blair, Negro League baseball player and civil rights movement activist, will address the students. Skyline High School is located at 7777 Forney Road.
- Students at Felix G. Botello Elementary School, 225 S. Marsalis, will observe African American History Month through a play performance, which will be presented during the PTA meeting, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m.
- Poetry and singing performances by students and staff members have been scheduled at John J. Pershing Elementary School, 5715 Meaders Lane, for Friday, Feb. 26.
