New Summer School Schedule Designed To Keep Knowledge Fresher

22 Mar 2010

Elementary and Middle School Students Scheduled for July 6-29; High School Students Set for June 16-July 22

DALLAS—Studies have found that a long summer break often results in students forgetting what they learned during the previous year. To curtail the summer learning loss, Dallas ISD has adjusted the summer school schedule.

Elementary school students will attend summer school July 6-29, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Middle school students also will attend summer school July 6-29, beginning at 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The high school program will begin June 16 and end July 22, from 8 a.m. until 1:35 p.m. North Dallas High School will offer a night program which starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.

With this new schedule, students will have less than a month before school begins again, which means they might better retain what they learned and be able to start learning new material from day one.

Moving summer school back also will give students in fifth and eighth grades the opportunity to attend TAKS academies to prepare for the third administration of the test without missing summer school.

Summer school will not mean long hours in a classroom doing worksheets or learning the information the same way that students did during the year.

Elementary school students attending summer school at the 22 Thriving Minds Summer Camps
will see academics combined with enrichment.

Students attending summer school at the high school level will have a week at the end to work on a project, which is required to get the necessary credits.

Students who are eligible for summer school will be notified by April. Parents or legal guardians are asked to fill out the enrollment form and return it to the student's school. Enrollment also can take place at the beginning of summer school at designated sites.

The district will have 22 sites for elementary summer school, 12 for middle school and 12 for high school. Students who attend summer school will receive breakfast and lunch.
