Dallas ISD Announces UNCF Scholarship Program

1 Apr 2010

Scholarships Available for Dallas ISD Students Graduating This Spring

DALLAS—The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and employees of the Dallas Independent School District are pleased to announce a scholarship program open to Dallas ISD seniors who will be graduating this spring and will attend a UNCF member college/university or any other 4-year fully accredited college or university.

"Each year Dallas ISD employees commit to supporting UNCF scholarships for students via payroll deductions or by making straight donations," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "This is an effort that we are proud to support because it takes the district's goal of making sure students are college ready when they graduate from high school to another level. It's an opportunity for us to show students we are sincere about wanting them to succeed, and we are willing to continue investing in their future. I'm grateful to all the employees for their participation."

Scholarships valued up to $2,500 will be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and academic potential. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, be a 2009-2010 graduating senior from a Dallas ISD high school and be enrolled full-time at a UNCF member institution or other 4-year fully accredited college or university.

"We are pleased to partner once again with the Dallas ISD as they help deserving young people pursue their dream of a college education," said UNCF's Area Development Director Diane Stephenson. "Their continued support has helped UNCF play a critical role in the future of our North Texas and national communities by preparing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in today's competitive workforce. We salute all of the Dallas ISD employees who have generously invested in UNCF and the future leaders of tomorrow."

In addition to meeting the requirements above, eligible students must submit an essay. The
application deadline is May 17, 2010. To apply visit: http://www.uncf.org/forstudents/onlinescholarships.asp.

The scholarships are made possible entirely from Dallas ISD employee donations through a workplace campaign in which participating employees make straight contributions or give via payroll deductions.
