Students Get Creative With U.S. Census Message
DALLAS—More than 1,000 Dallas ISD elementary, middle and high school students put crayons, markers and pencils to paper as they created posters depicting, from their perspective, the importance of participating in the U.S. Census. After review from several panels of judges, nine posters were selected as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in three categories and will be announced at an award ceremony 10 a.m., Friday, April 9, in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 3700 Ross Ave.
Sponsored by the Dallas ISD Social Studies Department and the U.S. Census, the poster contest allowed students across the district to take what they've learned about the census and create posters with a message encouraging everyone to be counted. The posters represented the diversity of the district's population as some were created in Spanish as well as English. Three winners will be announced in each category: elementary, middle and high school.
The poster contest is part of the U.S. Census in Schools: It's About Me campaign designed to create awareness among students about how schools and communities are affected by the census. Through the campaign, students are encouraged to share the information they learn at school with their parents, guardians and other community members in an effort to ensure a more accurate census count.
