Student Winners Of U.S. Census Poster Contest Announced

Students Created Poster Campaign to Increase Census Awareness

DALLAS—The winners of the U.S. Census Poster Contest were announced today at an awards ceremony recognizing Dallas ISD students who participated in a campaign to create awareness about the importance of the U.S. Census. More than 1,000 posters were submitted by students, and nine posters were selected as winners districtwide.

First, second and third place winners were announced in the elementary, middle and high school levels.

The first-place winners are:

• Nancy Pineda, 5th-grade, Esperanza "Hope" Medrano Elementary School

• Gladys Adjei, 8th-grade, Benjamin Franklin Middle School
• 
  
• Allison DeJulius, 12th-grade, School for the Talented and Gifted at Townview

Second-place winners are:

• Debbie Barron, 6th-grade, Jimmie Tyler Brashear Elementary School
• 
  
• Freda Martinez, 7th-grade, Dallas Environmental Science Academy
• 
  
• Sandra Hamzic, 11th-grade, W.T. White High School

Third-place winners are:

• Karla M. Deleon, 3rd-grade, Anne Frank Elementary School
• 
  
• Alyssa Douglas, 7th-grade, Seagoville Middle School
• 
  
• Nicole Suarez, 12th-grade, School of Science and Engineering, Townview

The contest was part of the 2010 Census in Schools: It's About Us campaign and was sponsored
by the Dallas ISD Social Studies Department and the U.S. Census.

More than 1,000 students participated in the poster contest. Some posters will be displayed at the U.S. Census Bureau National Headquarters in Washington, D.C. as well as regional and local census offices.
