7 May 2010

A Satellite Magnet Fair Will be Held May 15
to Inform Parents and Students About Program Options; Open Houses Begin May 17

DALLAS—Dallas ISD incoming ninth-grade students interested in attending one of the four new magnet programs offered through the district are invited to attend a Satellite Magnet Fair Saturday, May 15, from 8:30 a.m. until noon, at Justin F. Kimball High School, 3606 S. Westmoreland.

Four comprehensive high schools will be offering satellite magnets beginning this fall for incoming ninth-grade students districtwide. The programs will increase a grade level each year. The four high schools are: Justin F. Kimball, Science and Engineering Magnet; L.G. Pinkston, Law Magnet; Franklin D. Roosevelt, Health Magnet; and Seagoville, Environmental Magnet.

The magnets are part of the district's initiative to improve academic achievement at each of the four schools currently rated academically unacceptable by the state. The magnets will allow students to experience a different instructional program at each of the campuses. Based on last year's TAKS scores, all four schools met the academic requirements, but fell short in meeting the state's completion rate standards.

Each campus will hold an Open House during the week following the Satellite Magnet Fair.

Open House dates and times are:

The enrollment period for students is May 17 through June 1. Students may pick up an application at the Satellite Magnet Fair, any of the Open Houses, or at any district middle school. For more information, contact (972) 925-3300.
