News Conference Scheduled for Tuesday, June 1
DALLAS–The Greater Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will award Dallas Independent School District seniors and other deserving area students more than $1.8 million in college scholarships. Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa will join members of the GDHCC on Tuesday, June 1, at 10 a.m., in room 105 of the School Administration Building, 3700 Ross Avenue, for the Stars on the Rise scholarships presentation during a news conference.
This media event precedes the annual "Stars on the Rise" Scholarship Awards Banquet honoring the students to be held at 7 p.m., June 11, at the Fairmont Hotel, 1717 N. Akard St.
The scholarship recipients were selected from a group of more than 600 applicants, based on their academic achievement, grade point average, leadership, community service/work experience, and personal essay.
Since the creation of the Stars on the Rise program more than 20 years ago, the GDHCC has collaborated with the community, corporate donors, and educational institutions to assist more than 1,000 Dallas area students with their dream of pursuing a higher education.
The Stars on the Rise program has been supported by many businesses and organizations. Some of this year's sponsors include Aetna, Kroger, Verizon, University Crossroads, Texas A & M University-Commerce, and Navy Recruiting District Dallas.
"The Dallas Independent School District and the students it serves have made substantial strides over the last several years. Its academic gains have been some of the most impressive in the country, and the district is now viewed as one of the nation's fastest improving urban school systems."
