The two magnet schools have ranked at or near the top since 2006
DALLAS – Dallas ISD's School for the Talented and Gifted at the Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center has landed the No. 1 spot – for the second year in a row – on Newsweek magazine's 2010 list of America's Best High Schools. The School of Science and Engineering at Townview Center is ranked fourth. Five other Dallas ISD schools made the list, which comprises 1,622 schools representing the top 6 percent of high schools in the U.S. based on the magazine's criteria.
The School for Talented and Gifted has landed the top spot on the list four of the last five years, in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. In 2008, the school was ranked at No. 2.
Principal Michael Satarino said his school's consistent success comes from many sources working together. "In order to produce such high results, you must have students who are passionate about learning, taught by faculty who are passionate about teaching them, supported by parents who are passionate about the teaching/learning process being successful for their children," he said.
The School of Science and Engineering was ranked sixth in 2006, second in 2007, fourth in 2008, second in 2009 and fourth this year.
"Once again, we are honored to be ranked among America's Best High Schools for the fifth year in a row," said Principal Jovan Grant-Wells. "I am most proud of having the opportunity to work with such a diverse group of hard-working students. The students at SEM quickly become aware of the rigorous requirements and expectations at our school. It is amazing to observe how well they thrive in an academically challenging learning environment. Of course, without the exceptional students, committed parents, generous community members, dedicated faculty/staff and supportive Dallas ISD administrative leadership, this accomplishment would not be possible. It is truly an honor to serve the students of Dallas ISD."
Two other magnet high schools at Townview Center made the list: The Judge Barefoot Sanders Magnet Center for Public Service at Townview Center, listed at No. 153; and the School of Business and Management at Townview Center, No. 217.
"As a district, we are proud of the effort our teachers and campus staff make every day on behalf of our students," said Superintendent of Schools Michael Hinojosa. "Having the School for the Talented and Gifted listed at No. 1 for the second consecutive year, and the School for Science and Engineering once again in the Top 5, is an incredible achievement. Five other Dallas ISD schools made the list this year, which is also exciting."
In addition to the four magnet schools at Townview Center, three other Dallas ISD schools made 2010 list:
The Newsweek rankings were based on the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school, divided by the number of graduating seniors in that year.

Dallas ISD has become an exemplar for urban schools as an effort based district that focuses on high achievement for all students."
