Kindergartners To Attend Half-Days During First Week Of School

5 Aug 2010

Pre-kindergarten classes to start Monday, Aug. 30, following regular schedule

DALLAS–Unlike most Dallas ISD students who will attend a full day of classes starting on Monday, Aug. 23, district kindergartners will be in class 8 a.m.-noon during the week of Aug. 23-27. All pre-kindergarten classes will begin a week later, on Monday, Aug. 30, and follow the regular class schedule.

The half-days for kindergartners will allow teachers time to process enrollment forms and meet with students' families during the afternoon. It also provides the students with a transitional period to allow them to adjust to elementary school.

A later start for pre-kindergartners provides additional time for schools to determine which children qualify for services, administer assessments and prioritize applications to ensure that eligible students are enrolled in classes.

Dallas ISD follows guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency. To qualify for pre-kindergarten, a child must be 4 years old on Sept. 1 of the current school year and be unable to speak and comprehend English; or be educationally disadvantaged; or be a dependent of an active-duty, uniformed member of the military or of a military parent who is missing in action or deceased; or be a foster child.
